Broadmoor Seven Falls is a series of seven cascading waterfalls located in a box canyon southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The falls drop a total of 181 feet (55 meters) over a sheer cliff face.
Visual Characteristics
The falls descend over a granite cliff face. The water is typically clear, with varying degrees of white foam depending on flow rate. The surrounding canyon walls are composed of reddish-brown sedimentary rock. Vegetation consists of Ponderosa pines and scrub oak on the upper slopes, with more sparse growth directly around the falls.
Location & Access Logistics
Seven Falls is located approximately 7 miles (11 km) southwest of downtown Colorado Springs. Access is via North Cheyenne Canyon Road, which becomes Seven Falls Road. Parking is available at the entrance to the attraction. A shuttle service operates from the parking area to the base of the falls during peak operational hours. Public transport options are limited; the nearest bus route requires a significant walk.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The geological formation of the canyon is attributed to the erosion of sedimentary rock by the Cheyenne Creek over millions of years. The falls themselves were a natural feature, later developed for tourism. The area was acquired and developed by the Broadmoor Hotel in the early 20th century.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can ascend 224 steps to the top of the falls for an elevated view. Hiking trails are available in the surrounding canyon. Observation platforms are situated at the base of the falls. Elevator access to the upper viewing area is provided. Rappelling and zip-lining activities are offered seasonally.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the base of the falls. Shade is provided by the canyon walls and some strategically placed awnings. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food and beverage vendors operate on-site.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting on the falls, late morning to early afternoon provides direct sunlight. The best months for visiting are typically May through October, when weather conditions are most favorable. Water flow is generally highest in late spring due to snowmelt.
Facts & Legends
The area was once a private hunting ground for the Cheyenne people. A unique feature is the elevator carved directly into the cliff face, allowing access to the upper viewing platform without climbing all the steps.
