Catskill Scenic Trail, Catskills, USA New York, North America
The Catskill Scenic Trail is a 38-mile multi-use rail trail located in the Catskill Mountains region of New York State. It follows the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad corridor.
Visual Characteristics
The trail surface consists primarily of packed gravel and crushed stone, suitable for cycling, walking, and horseback riding. It traverses a varied landscape including forests, open fields, and crosses several small streams and the Susquehanna River via former railroad bridges. The surrounding vegetation is deciduous forest, with seasonal changes in foliage color.
Location & Access Logistics
The trail has multiple access points. The western terminus is near Sidney, NY, accessible via NY State Route 10. The eastern terminus is near Bloomville, NY, also accessible via NY State Route 10. Parking is available at designated trailheads, including those in Sidney, Masonville, and Bloomville. Public transport options are limited; nearest Amtrak service is in Oneonta, approximately 15 miles from the western end.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The trail utilizes the former right-of-way of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, which operated from the late 19th century until its abandonment in 1976. The land was acquired by the state for recreational purposes. Ecologically, the area is part of the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forest region.
Key Highlights & Activities
Cycling the full length of the trail is a primary activity. Hiking and cross-country skiing are also permitted. Birdwatching is common due to the varied habitats. Fishing is possible in adjacent waterways.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at some larger trailheads, such as the one in Sidney. Shade is provided by the surrounding tree canopy along much of the route. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally poor in more remote sections. No food vendors are directly on the trail; provisions should be carried or obtained in nearby towns.
Best Time to Visit
For cycling and hiking, late spring through early autumn (May to October) offers the most favorable weather. Summer months can be warm. Autumn provides distinct foliage viewing opportunities. Winter conditions may make the trail unsuitable for cycling due to snow and ice.
Facts & Legends
The trail crosses the Susquehanna River on a former railroad trestle, offering elevated views of the river valley. A specific historical detail is the presence of old railroad mile markers still visible in some sections.
