Ample on-site parking is available for vehicles. The Durango Transit bus system does not directly service the hot springs; private vehicle or taxi service is required.

The hot springs were discovered and utilized by indigenous peoples for centuries. Commercial development began in the late 19th century. The geothermal activity is associated with the San Juan volcanic field, with water emerging from deep underground aquifers.
