Dark View Fall, Saint Vincent, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, North America
Dark View Fall is a two-tiered waterfall located on the island of Saint Vincent in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It is situated within the Morne Garu Forest Reserve.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall descends in two distinct stages. The upper tier drops approximately 10 meters into a shallow pool. The lower tier cascades a further 5 meters into a larger, deeper pool suitable for swimming. The rock face is composed of dark volcanic rock, with moss and ferns growing on its surface. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest.
Location & Access Logistics
Dark View Fall is located on the northeastern coast of Saint Vincent, approximately 25 kilometers from the capital city of Kingstown. Access is via the Windward Highway, turning onto the road towards Wallilabou. From the main road, a further 2-kilometer unpaved track leads to the parking area. Public transport options are limited; a taxi or rental car is recommended. The final approach involves a short walk of approximately 500 meters through the forest.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is a natural geological formation, carved by water erosion over millennia through volcanic rock. The surrounding Morne Garu Forest Reserve is a protected area established to preserve the island's native flora and fauna.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming in the lower pool is permitted. Visitors can walk behind the lower cascade. Observation of the surrounding rainforest ecosystem is possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A small parking area is available. Basic restroom facilities are present at the trailhead. There are no food vendors on-site. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the forest reserve.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is mid-morning when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The months of December to May offer drier weather conditions. The waterfall's flow is consistent year-round, though it increases significantly during the rainy season (June to November).
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the pools at the base of the waterfall have healing properties. The name "Dark View" is attributed to the dense canopy that limits direct sunlight reaching the falls for much of the day.
