Fossil Butte National Monument is a protected area in Lincoln County, Wyoming, preserving significant fossil deposits.

Visual Characteristics

The monument encompasses arid badlands and rolling hills. The exposed rock layers are primarily sedimentary, displaying shades of tan, brown, and grey. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of sagebrush, grasses, and scattered juniper trees. The butte itself is a prominent mesa with a relatively flat summit.

Location & Access Logistics

Fossil Butte National Monument is located approximately 15 miles west of Kemmerer, Wyoming. Access is via Wyoming Highway 233, a paved road. The monument entrance is clearly marked. Parking is available at the visitor center and designated pull-offs. No public transportation services operate directly to the monument.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The fossil deposits at Fossil Butte date back to the Eocene epoch, approximately 50 million years ago. This area was once a large freshwater lake, known as Fossil Lake. The rapid burial of organisms in the fine lake sediments led to exceptional fossil preservation, particularly of fish, insects, and plants.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the Fossil Butte Visitor Center, which features exhibits on paleontology and the ancient environment. Self-guided interpretive trails allow exploration of the fossil-bearing formations. Ranger-led programs are offered seasonally. Collecting fossils is strictly prohibited.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the visitor center. Limited shade is provided by structures at the visitor center and picnic areas. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the monument boundaries. No food vendors are present within the monument; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for visiting is from late spring through early fall (May to October) when weather conditions are most favorable. Mid-morning to late afternoon offers the best natural light for viewing the geological formations. There are no tidal considerations at this inland site.

Facts & Legends

Fossil Butte is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved Eocene fish fossils, including species like Diplomystus and Knightia, which are often found in large, layered slabs. A unique tip for visitors is to look for the subtle ripple marks preserved in some of the finer sedimentary layers, indicating ancient water currents.
