Entrance Viewpoint, Plitvice Lakes, Croatia, Europe
The Entrance Viewpoint is a high-altitude observation platform located immediately adjacent to Entrance 1 (North Entrance) of Plitvice Lakes National Park. It provides the primary panoramic orientation of the Lower Lakes canyon and the Big Waterfall.
Visual Characteristics
The viewpoint offers a vertical perspective of the "Great Fall" (Veliki Slap) and the Sastavci waterfalls. From this elevation, the contrast between the limestone cliffs and the turquoise water is most pronounced. The view encompasses the final four lakes of the chain: Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac, and Novakovića Brod.
Location & Access Logistics
Access: Situated approximately 100 meters past the ticket office at Entrance 1.
Path: A fenced, gravel walkway leads to several protruding wooden platforms. It is the starting point for Programs A, B, C, and K.
Parking: Use the official Entrance 1 parking lot (P1).
Difficulty: Minimal; the primary viewing areas are level with the entrance gate, requiring no significant climbing.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This viewpoint overlooks the oldest geological part of the park, where the canyon is deepest. The cliffs are composed of Upper Cretaceous limestone. The landscape visible from this point has been featured in global tourism media for decades, serving as the "face" of the park. It highlights the geomorphological transition where the lake system ends and the Korana River begins.
Key Highlights & Activities
Panoramic Photography: This is the most photographed location in the park. It captures the 78-meter drop of Veliki Slap and the zigzagging wooden boardwalks below.
Orientation: Visitors use this point to visualize the scale of the Lower Lakes canyon before descending the serpentine path to the water level.
Bird Watching: The thermals in the canyon often attract birds of prey, such as the peregrine falcon, which can be spotted from this height.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Safety: The platforms are reinforced with wooden and steel railings.
Information: Interpretive boards detailing the names of the visible lakes and waterfalls are present.
Connectivity: 5G signal is exceptionally strong at the canyon rim.
Nearby: The Entrance 1 complex includes restrooms, a buffet, a souvenir shop, and an exchange office.
Best Time to Visit
Morning: The sun is behind the observer, illuminating the waterfalls and the canyon floor directly.
Winter: Offers clear views of the ice formations on Veliki Slap without the obstruction of deciduous foliage.
Crowd Management: This area becomes heavily congested between 10:00 and 14:00 as tour groups arrive.
Facts & Legends
While the "Entrance Viewpoint" is the official one, a "secret" viewpoint (Vidikovac) is located on the opposite side of the canyon, accessible via the bridge above Veliki Slap. This secondary point offers the specific angle popularized in postcards where the boardwalks form a perfect "S" curve through the water.
