Estany Primer, Ordino, Andorra, Europe
Estany Primer is a high-altitude glacial lake situated at 2,249 meters within the Tristaina Cirque in the Ordino parish of Andorra. It is the lowest and first of the three lakes encountered on the standard hiking loop from the Ordino Arcalís base.
Visual Characteristics
The lake features clear, deep blue water with a rocky perimeter composed of dark slate and schist debris. It has a roughly circular shape covering 2.4 hectares with a maximum depth of 27 meters. Sparse alpine grasses and small shrubs characterize the surrounding vegetation, with the rugged peaks of the Tristaina massif reflecting on the surface.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via a marked trail starting from the Restaurant de la Coma at the end of the CG-3 road. The hike from the parking lot to the lake shore takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes on a moderately steep path. The L6 bus line provides transport to Ordino, where seasonal shuttles continue to the Arcalís ski resort area.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake is a tarn formed by glacial scouring during the last glacial period, approximately 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. It is part of the UNESCO-designated Ordino Biosphere Reserve. The ecosystem supports high-altitude species such as the Pyrenean brook salamander and various trout species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with a circular 4.4km route connecting all three Tristaina lakes. Fishing is permitted with a specific high-mountain license during the regulated season. The shoreline provides flat rock areas for resting and observation of the surrounding Pyrenean peaks.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There is no infrastructure directly on the lake shore to preserve the natural environment. Restrooms, food vendors, and emergency services are located 1km away at the Restaurant de la Coma. 4G/5G mobile signal is generally functional but can be intermittent near the water's edge due to the surrounding rock walls.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are July through September when the trail is entirely free of snow. For photography, mid-morning offers the best illumination before the surrounding peaks cast long shadows. In winter, the lake is frozen and covered in snow, often requiring snowshoes or skis for access.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition suggests the water possesses purifying qualities due to its high altitude and isolation. A specific historical oddity is the lake's role in the "Solar Tristaina" phenomenon, where it acts as a mirror for the peaks during the summer solstice, a site historically noted by local shepherds for seasonal navigation.
