The current masonry fort was constructed between 1839 and 1852 and incorporates Egyptian Revival architectural features, a distinctive style among U.S. coastal forts. Over its history, the fort has served multiple roles, including housing the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and hosting the Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory, which developed sonar systems for submarines during the Cold War.

The Visitor Center and museum operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday, featuring interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations, and displays covering military history from the Revolutionary War through the Cold War.
