Fort Trumbull State Park, New London, USA Connecticut, North America

Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, Connecticut, is a historic site covering 17 acres along the Thames River. The park offers a combination of military history, scenic views, and recreational opportunities, preserving over two centuries of American coastal defense heritage.

Historical Significance

The original Fort Trumbull was built in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War to protect the Connecticut government and coastal interests. The current masonry fort was constructed between 1839 and 1852 and incorporates Egyptian Revival architectural features, a distinctive style among U.S. coastal forts. Over its history, the fort has served multiple roles, including housing the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and hosting the Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory, which developed sonar systems for submarines during the Cold War.

Visitor Experience

The park grounds are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. Visitors can explore the exterior walls, ramparts, and enjoy panoramic views of the Thames River. The Visitor Center and museum operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday, featuring interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations, and displays covering military history from the Revolutionary War through the Cold War.

Inside the fort, visitors can explore restored 19th-century living quarters, a mock research laboratory, and a 1950s-era office set up to resemble a development facility. The fort’s ramparts and bastions provide excellent vantage points for photography and observation.

Recreational Activities

Fort Trumbull State Park offers a boardwalk and a fishing pier, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings. Fishing is permitted at any time, though a Connecticut saltwater fishing license is required for nighttime use. Walking and biking along the park’s trails provide scenic river views, while open areas are ideal for picnicking and relaxing.

Events

The park hosts several annual events, including maritime heritage festivals featuring historical demonstrations, live music, and family-friendly activities. Seasonal fireworks displays and special exhibitions are also common, making the park a hub for community gatherings and cultural celebrations.
