Ghost Village (Al Madam), Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, Asia
Al Madam Ghost Village is a deserted settlement located in the Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, approximately 60 kilometers southeast of the city of Sharjah.
Visual Characteristics
The village consists of approximately 100 abandoned residential structures, primarily single-story houses and a mosque. The buildings are constructed from concrete blocks and cinder blocks, with some featuring corrugated metal roofing. Exterior walls are typically painted in muted earth tones, such as beige and light brown. Sand has accumulated significantly within and around the structures, partially burying doorways and windows.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Al Madam Ghost Village is via the E44 highway (Dubai-Hatta Road). From Sharjah city center, proceed southeast on the E44 for approximately 50 kilometers. Turn off the E44 onto a smaller paved road (signposted for Al Madam). The village is located approximately 10 kilometers from this turn-off. There is no designated parking; visitors typically park on the unpaved ground adjacent to the village. Public transport is not available directly to the site.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The village was reportedly built in the 1970s for the Al Ketbi tribe. The exact reason for its abandonment is not definitively documented, but theories include insufficient water supply or the relocation of residents to more modern housing provided by the government. The area is characterized by desert terrain, with sand dunes surrounding the settlement.
Key Highlights & Activities
Exploration of the abandoned houses and mosque. Observation of the sand encroachment on the structures. Photography of the architectural decay and desert landscape.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no public restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors at Al Madam Ghost Village. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available but can be intermittent within the structures.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time for visiting is during the cooler months, from October to April. Early morning or late afternoon provides the best natural light for photography, avoiding the harshest midday sun. There are no tidal considerations.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests the village is haunted, contributing to its "ghost village" moniker. One specific account mentions the presence of djinn, which purportedly drove the residents away. While unverified, this narrative is frequently cited by visitors.
