The street earned the nickname "Gospodska" (Gentlemen's Street) in the late 1800s. According to local history, a merchant named Tomo Radulović, frustrated by peasants entering his high-end shop with muddy boots, placed a sign reading "Gospodska ulica" to deter them. The name persisted despite several official name changes. Most of the current buildings were constructed during the Austro-Hungarian period, replacing older Ottoman-style wooden shops.
