Vrelo Krivaje, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
Vrelo Krivaje is a natural karst spring located in the village of Šimići, approximately 30km north of Banja Luka. It serves as the source of the Krivaja River (a tributary of the Gomjenica) and is a localized site for eco-tourism and nature photography.
Visual Characteristics
The site is characterized by water emerging from a limestone cavern at the base of a forested hill. The spring forms a clear, turquoise pool before cascading over small travertine barriers. The surrounding area is dominated by dense deciduous forest and moss-covered rocks, maintaining a vibrant green aesthetic even during dry periods.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Village of Šimići, Ivanjska region, NW of Banja Luka.
Access: Reached via the M-16 highway toward Prijedor/Potkozarje, followed by local asphalt and macadam roads through the villages of Mišin Han and Šimići.
Transit: No direct public transportation serves the spring. Private vehicle or mountain bike is required.
Parking: Unregulated shoulder parking is available near the trailhead leading to the spring.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The spring is a typical Dinaric karst phenomenon where subterranean waters from the Kozara mountain massif reach an impermeable layer and surface. Historically, the spring was used by local inhabitants to power small wooden watermills, the remains of which are occasionally visible downstream. The water maintains a constant temperature of approximately 8°C to 10°C year-round.
Key Highlights & Activities
Nature Photography: The spring is a popular destination for landscape photographers due to the contrast between the turquoise water and the dark forest.
Picnicking: There are several cleared areas around the spring used by locals for outdoor gatherings.
Hiking: The surrounding hills of the Potkozarje region offer numerous unmarked trails for light trekking.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure at Vrelo Krivaje is minimal. There are no official public restrooms, visitor centers, or commercial vendors on-site. Visitors must bring their own supplies and carry out waste. 4G cellular signal is intermittent due to the hilly terrain and dense forest cover.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May): Optimal for viewing high water discharge and lush vegetation.
Autumn (October): Recommended for the fall foliage colors reflecting in the spring pool.
Summer: A frequent escape for locals seeking to avoid the city's heat, as the microclimate at the spring is significantly cooler.
Facts & Legends
Local residents often attribute healing properties to the water, claiming it is exceptionally pure due to the lack of industrial activity upstream on the Kozara slopes. The area is also part of a wider region known for traditional "zbor" (village gatherings) where local folklore is preserved.
