The estate encompasses 565 acres of landscaped gardens, including Italian, Japanese, and Rose gardens, as well as forested areas and a significant shoreline.

Public transport options include BC Transit bus routes 50 and 52, which stop near the main entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The estate was built between 1908 and 1912 for James Dunsmuir, a former Premier of British Columbia and owner of a significant coal mining and railway empire. The original purpose was a private residence. The grounds include a variety of native and introduced plant species, with the forested areas primarily composed of Douglas fir, Western red cedar, and Arbutus trees.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can tour Hatley Castle, which houses the Royal Roads University administrative offices and museum exhibits. Exploration of the themed gardens, including the Italian Garden with its pergola and fountain, the Japanese Garden with its koi pond, and the Rose Garden, is permitted. Walking trails are available throughout the forested sections of the estate.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the castle and near the garden entrances. Limited shaded areas are present within the gardens. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available across the estate. Food vendors are not typically present on-site; visitors are advised to bring their own provisions or dine in nearby Colwood or Victoria.
