It serves as a primary venue for athletic competitions, concerts, and exhibitions within the city.

Visual Characteristics

The structure is a large, rectangular building with a distinctive domed roof. The exterior is primarily clad in light-colored concrete panels, with large glass sections integrated into the facade, particularly around the main entrances. The roof is a prominent feature, appearing as a smooth, curved surface from a distance. The overall height of the main arena structure is approximately 40 meters.

The Hiroshima Green Arena is situated at 4-10 Hondori, Naka Ward, Hiroshima. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers east of Hiroshima Station. Access by car involves exiting the Hiroshima Expressway Route 2 at the Hondori interchange. Public parking is available on-site, with capacity for approximately 1,000 vehicles. Public transport options include the Hiroshima Streetcar (Tram) lines 1, 2, and 6, with the nearest stop being "Chuden-mae," located a 5-minute walk from the arena. Several local bus routes also serve the immediate vicinity.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Hiroshima Green Arena commenced in 1987 and was completed in 1994. The primary architect was the firm Nikken Sekkei. The facility was designed to provide a modern, large-scale venue for sports and cultural events, contributing to the post-war reconstruction and development of Hiroshima as a city of peace and culture. It is built on reclaimed land adjacent to the Ota River delta.

Key Highlights & Activities

The main arena can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators for sporting events and concerts. It hosts professional basketball (Hiroshima Dragonflies), volleyball, and handball games. The facility also includes smaller exhibition halls and meeting rooms. Visitors can attend scheduled sporting events, concerts, and trade shows. Guided tours of the facility are not regularly offered.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available throughout the facility. Designated seating areas provide some overhead shade during events. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the arena. Food vendors and concession stands operate during scheduled events, offering a range of snacks and beverages. Limited seating is available in public concourse areas.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit depends on the scheduled events. For photography of the exterior, late afternoon light provides even illumination. For attending events, check the official schedule for specific dates and times. There are no tidal considerations for visiting this inland facility.

Facts & Legends

The Hiroshima Green Arena was designed with earthquake resistance in mind, incorporating advanced structural engineering principles to withstand seismic activity common in the region. A unique aspect of its design is the integration of natural light through strategically placed skylights in the concourse areas, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.
