Reethi Rah Beach is a public beach located on the island of Thinadhoo within the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll of the Maldives.
Visual Characteristics
The beach features fine, white coral sand. The water exhibits a gradient of turquoise and deep blue, with visibility typically exceeding 30 meters. Coconut palm trees line the interior edge of the beach, providing natural shade.
Location & Access Logistics
Thinadhoo island is accessible via domestic flight from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Kaadedhdhoo Airport (KDH), followed by a 15-minute speedboat transfer. Reethi Rah Beach is situated on the eastern side of Thinadhoo, approximately 1.5 kilometers from the island's main jetty. Walking is the primary mode of transport on the island. Limited parking is available near the jetty for resort vehicles.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The island of Thinadhoo, like the surrounding Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, is a coral island formed from the accumulation of coral polyps over millennia. The beach itself is a result of natural erosion and deposition processes within the atoll's lagoon system.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is permitted. Snorkeling is possible along the house reef, accessible from the shore. Sunbathing is a common activity. Kayak rentals are available from local operators.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at designated public areas. Shade is provided by natural vegetation. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and small cafes are located near the island's inhabited areas, approximately 1 kilometer from the beach.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the period between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM offers direct sunlight. The dry season, from December to April, provides the most favorable weather conditions with minimal rainfall and calm seas. High tide is generally preferred for swimming and water activities.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the island's name, Thinadhoo, derives from "Thina," meaning "long," referring to the island's elongated shape. A specific tip for visitors is to observe the bioluminescent plankton that can sometimes be seen in the water after sunset during certain moon phases.
