Kameni Most (Stone Bridge), Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
The Stone Bridge is a masonry arch structure spanning the Kočeva stream near its confluence with the Bosna River in the central district of Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It serves as one of the few surviving examples of Ottoman-era civil engineering within the city’s urban core.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge is constructed from hewn limestone blocks joined with lead and mortar. It features a single, slightly pointed arch characteristic of 16th-century Ottoman architecture. The walking surface consists of stone cobblestones, and the structure is flanked by low stone parapets. The masonry displays a weathered grey patina with visible mineral deposits from the stream below.
Location & Access Logistics
The bridge is located at the junction of Ulica Maršala Tita and the Kočeva stream, approximately 0.4 km northeast of Zenica City Hall. It is situated within the pedestrian-heavy old commercial zone. Visitors can reach the site via any central bus line stopping at the "Metalurg" or "Centar" stations. Parking is available at the nearby Multiplex Ekran commercial garage, 200 meters to the west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bridge dates back to the 16th century, commissioned during the Ottoman administration to provide a permanent crossing over the Kočeva stream for local trade routes. It was built using traditional stone-cutting techniques designed to withstand the flash floods typical of small mountain tributaries. The structure has undergone several minor restorations to preserve its original vaulted geometry.
Key Highlights & Activities
The bridge is primarily used as a pedestrian crossing and a historical landmark for heritage tours. It offers a vantage point for viewing the narrow Kočeva canyon as it enters the city center. Photography of the arch is most common from the modern road bridge located immediately downstream.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no dedicated amenities on the bridge itself. Public restrooms and food vendors are located in the adjacent "Stara čaršija" (Old Bazaar) district and the nearby City Museum. The site is fully covered by 5G cellular signal. Street lighting from the surrounding urban roads provides sufficient visibility at night.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is at midday when the sun is directly overhead, eliminating shadows within the arch. The months of May and June offer the most vibrant surrounding vegetation along the stream banks. During the winter, the stone surface can become slippery due to ice accumulation.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition suggests that the bridge was built using a mortar mixture containing egg whites to increase the durability of the stone joints, a common myth associated with many Ottoman stone bridges in the Balkans. It is the oldest standing bridge in the city of Zenica.
