Old Bridge in Zenica, Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
The Old Bridge in Zenica, also known as the Drveni Most (Wooden Bridge) site, spans the Bosna River connecting the city center with the Blatuša district. It serves as a secondary pedestrian and vehicular link, positioned north of the primary urban bridges.
Visual Characteristics
The current structure is a concrete and steel beam bridge supported by reinforced concrete piers anchored in the riverbed. The road surface is asphalt, flanked by narrow elevated sidewalks with protective green metal railings. The surrounding riverbanks are stabilized with stone riprap and sparse riparian vegetation, primarily willow and poplar trees.
Location & Access Logistics
The bridge is located at the intersection of Bulevar Kralja Tvrtka I and Ulica Dr. Safveta-bega Bašagića. It is approximately 0.8 km north of the Zenica City Hall. Access is possible via city bus lines 1 and 7, which stop at the Blatuša intersection. On-street parking is available on the eastern side of the bridge in the residential sector of the city.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site originally featured a traditional wooden bridge constructed during the Ottoman period to facilitate trade across the Bosna River. The wooden structure was replaced several times due to flood damage, eventually leading to the construction of the permanent concrete bridge in the mid-20th century. It remains an essential crossing point within the river's hydrological corridor.
Key Highlights & Activities
The bridge is used primarily for local transit between the industrial-residential zones and the central commercial district. Pedestrians use the walkways for recreational walking along the Bulevar quay. Fishing is common on the banks directly beneath the bridge during the summer months when the Bosna River level recedes.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Lighting is provided by standard overhead street lamps integrated into the bridge structure. There are no restrooms or shelters on the bridge; however, the western bank leads directly to the Kamberovića Polje park, which contains public facilities. 5G cellular signal is available across the entire span.
Best Time to Visit
Photography is most effective during the late afternoon (16:00 to 18:00) when the sun is positioned to the west, casting light across the river's flow. Spring is the best season to observe the river at its highest volume, though late summer allows for access to the gravel bars beneath the piers.
Facts & Legends
Despite its modern concrete construction, locals still refer to it as the "Old Bridge" or "Wooden Bridge" in reference to the historical timber crossing that stood on this site for centuries before modern engineering was introduced.
