Klemenča Jama Hut, Logarska Dolina, Slovenia, Europe
Klemenča Jama Hut is a high-altitude mountain refuge situated at 1,208 meters on a karst plateau above the Logar Valley. It is positioned on the northern slopes of Mount Ojstrica within the Kamnik-Savinja Alps of northern Slovenia.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is a two-story alpine cabin constructed of dark wood and stone, featuring a steep gabled roof. It is surrounded by a grassy clearing and a dense forest of larch and spruce trees. The backdrop consists of the sheer limestone faces of the Krofička and Ojstrica peaks, with grey rock debris fields visible nearby.
Location & Access Logistics
The primary trailhead starts at the Penzion na Razpotju parking area in the Logar Valley center. A marked, steep forest trail ascends for approximately 1 hour to reach the hut. Alternatively, access is possible via a longer trail from the tunnel near the entrance of the valley. Public transport reaches the Solčava and Logar Valley crossroads (6km away) via regional bus lines.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site originated as a shepherd's hut before being converted into a basic mountaineering shelter in 1954 by the Solčava Alpine Club. The current expanded hut was completed in 1983 to accommodate increasing tourist traffic. Geologically, it sits on a glacial terrace composed of Triassic limestone.
Key Highlights & Activities
The hut serves as a critical base for technical ascents of Ojstrica via the Kopinšek route and Krofička. A major attraction is the site of the thickest larch tree in Slovenia, located a short walk from the cabin. It is a primary stop for hikers traversing the Kamnik-Savinja Alps trail network.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility provides 42 beds across private rooms and a communal dormitory. It includes a dining room, basic indoor restrooms, and a washroom with cold water. Electricity is supplied via solar panels. 4G cellular signal is weak and inconsistent. Traditional mountain meals, such as jota and buckwheat spoonbread, are served daily during the season.
Best Time to Visit
The hut is officially open from June through September; it occasionally opens on weekends in May and October depending on snow conditions. Late September is optimal for viewing the yellowing larch needles. Morning light is best for photographing the northern wall of Ojstrica from the hut’s terrace.
Facts & Legends
Near the hut stands a larch tree with a circumference of 4.64 meters, estimated to be several centuries old. Local history identifies this plateau as a former high-altitude pasture where livestock were sequestered during summer months, a practice that preceded the mountaineering era of the valley.
