Rinka Waterfall, Logarska Dolina, Slovenia, Europe

Rinka Waterfall is a 90-meter high dispersed horsetail waterfall located at the head of the Logar Valley in northern Slovenia. It is the source of the Savinja River and falls over a vertical tectonic limestone wall within the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

Visual Characteristics

The waterfall drops as a thin, vertical column of water that fans out across the dark grey limestone face. The surrounding rock is characterized by steep, rugged grey cliffs and sparse subalpine vegetation. At the base, a small plunge pool collects water before it disappears into the gravel and re-emerges further down the valley.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is located at the southern terminus of the Logarska Dolina regional road. From the town of Solčava, follow the main valley road for 7km to the final parking area. A designated 15-minute uphill forest trail leads from the parking lot to the viewing platform. Entry to the Logar Valley park by motor vehicle requires a fee, while pedestrian access is free.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The waterfall is a natural geomorphological monument resulting from the Savinja River flowing over a resistant limestone threshold. It was officially protected in 1987 as part of the Logar Valley Landscape Park. The geological substrate consists of Triassic limestone and dolomite typical of the Eastern Alps.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking is the primary activity, with the trail to the waterfall serving as the starting point for high-mountain ascents to Frischaufov dom on Okrešelj. The "Orlovo gnezdo" (Eagle's Nest) snack bar is built into the cliffside directly next to the falls, providing a close-range viewing platform. Photography of the 90-meter drop is possible from the base or the elevated bar terrace.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms and a small catering facility (Eagle's Nest) are located at the waterfall's viewing point. Additional dining and full facilities are available at the mountain huts and tourist farms 2km down the valley. Cell phone signal (4G) is weak and inconsistent due to the high surrounding mountain walls. Shade is abundant along the forest approach trail.

Best Time to Visit

Flow volume is highest in May and June during the snowmelt period or after heavy autumn rains. For photography, mid-morning provides the best illumination before the sun moves behind the high peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. In winter, the waterfall frequently freezes, attracting ice climbers.

Facts & Legends

Rinka Waterfall is the second highest waterfall in Slovenia and is considered the birthplace of the Savinja River. A local curiosity is the Eagle's Nest bar, which is structurally anchored directly into the vertical rock face, offering a vantage point that hangs over the edge of the lower cascades.
