Krka National Park, Krk, Croatia, Europe
Krka National Park is a protected natural area located along the Krka River in southern Croatia, primarily within Šibenik-Knin County. The park encompasses 109 square kilometers of the river basin, characterized by a series of seven travertine waterfalls and karst canyon formations.
Visual Characteristics
The park is defined by karst topography, featuring limestone canyons and turquoise waters rich in calcium carbonate. The largest waterfall, Skradinski buk, consists of 17 steps of travertine barriers spanning a width of 200 to 400 meters. Vegetation is dense, consisting of sub-Mediterranean flora including hornbeam, oak, and willow trees surrounding the riverbanks.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is located approximately 15km inland from the city of Šibenik. Primary entrances are Lozovac, accessible via the D33 road with free parking, and Skradin, which requires a boat transfer provided by the park. Public bus lines connect Šibenik and Zadar to both Skradin and Lozovac.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Krka was established as a national park in 1985 to protect the Krka River ecosystem and its travertine-building processes. Historically, the river powered the first alternating current hydroelectric power plant in Europe, the Jaruga Hydroelectric Power Plant, built in 1895 based on Nikola Tesla’s designs.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking is restricted to a network of wooden boardwalks and gravel paths. Boat excursions depart from Skradinski buk to the Visovac Monastery and Roški slap. Educational trails feature restored watermills that demonstrate traditional grain milling and cloth weaving. Swimming is prohibited in all areas of the park to preserve travertine formations.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located at the Lozovac entrance, Skradinski buk, and Roški slap. Shaded resting areas and wooden benches are distributed along the main 1.9km circular trail. 4G/5G cellular signals are generally stable near the main entrances but fluctuate within deep canyon sections. Food stalls and souvenir shops operate at the Skradinski buk plateau.
Best Time to Visit
The highest water volume occurs in spring (April and May) following snowmelt and rain. For photography, the morning hours (08:00–10:00) provide soft, directional light on the waterfalls and fewer crowds. Summer (July and August) is the peak tourist season with high temperatures and maximum visitor capacity.
Facts & Legends
The Island of Visovac houses a Franciscan monastery containing a rare 15th-century illustrated copy of Aesop’s Fables, one of only three in existence. Local lore suggests the Krka River was a boundary for Roman legions, evidenced by the nearby ruins of the Burnum military amphitheater.
