Krushuna Waterfalls, Pleven, Bulgaria, Europe
The Krushuna Waterfalls (Krushunski vodopadi) are the largest water travertine cascade in Bulgaria. Note: Contrary to your prompt, they are located in the Lovech Province, approximately 45 km east of Pleven.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfalls are known for their bright turquoise water, a result of high mineral content and the limestone (travertine) bedrock. The main fall is approximately 20 meters high, cascading into a series of smaller pools and terraces surrounded by lush vegetation and moss-covered rocks.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: 25 Krushunski vodopad St., 5561 Krushuna.
Access from Pleven: Approximately a 50-minute drive via Route 301.
Arrival: The falls are situated at the edge of the village of Krushuna. A large parking area is available at the entrance of the Maara natural park.
Eco-trail: A circular eco-trail with bridges and wooden stairs provides access to different levels of the cascade. The full walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Geological & Ecological Origin
The falls are formed by the karst springs of the Maarata area. The constant deposition of calcium carbonate creates the travertine terraces. The area is rich in caves and specialized flora and fauna adapted to the high humidity and mineral-rich environment.
