Lake of Pessons, Pas de la Casa, Andorra, Europe
Visual Characteristics
The lake features clear, cold water, often reflecting the surrounding granite peaks and rocky terrain. The shoreline consists primarily of scree and exposed rock, with sparse alpine vegetation such as grasses, mosses, and low-lying shrubs. The elevation of the lake is approximately 2,500 meters above sea level.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Lake of Pessons is primarily from the Grau Roig sector, which is approximately 6 kilometers from Pas de la Casa. A dirt track leads towards the lake from Grau Roig. During the summer months (typically July to September), a 4x4 shuttle service operates from the Grau Roig parking area to the vicinity of the lake. Private vehicle access is restricted beyond a certain point on the track. Parking is available at the Grau Roig ski resort base.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Lake of Pessons is a glacial tarn, formed by the erosive and depositional actions of glaciers during the last ice age. It is part of a series of interconnected glacial lakes within the Circ de Pessons, a classic example of a glacial cirque characterized by its U-shaped valley and moraine deposits.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is a primary activity, with numerous trails leading around the lake and to other lakes within the Circ de Pessons. Fishing for trout is permitted with a valid license issued by the Andorran government. Photography of the alpine landscape and wildlife is common. The area is also a starting point for more challenging mountaineering routes.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Refugi de Pessons, a mountain refuge, is located near the lake, offering basic accommodation, a restaurant, and restrooms. There is limited natural shade directly at the lake's edge due to the high-altitude, treeless environment. Cell phone signal (4G) can be intermittent around the lake but is generally more reliable near the refuge.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time to visit Lake of Pessons is from late June to early October, when the snow has largely melted, and hiking trails are accessible. Early morning provides the best light for photography, minimizing harsh reflections on the water and offering clearer views of the surrounding peaks. No specific tide requirements apply to this alpine lake.
Facts & Legends
The Circ de Pessons is the largest glacial cirque in Andorra, encompassing over a dozen lakes and ponds. A practical tip for visitors is to carry sufficient water and sun protection, as the high altitude increases sun exposure and dehydration risk.
