Lakeba Island is the largest island in the Lau Archipelago, covering 58 square kilometers. It serves as the provincial capital and the traditional seat of the Tui Nayau, the paramount chief of the Lau Islands.1
Geography and Topography
Unlike many volcanic islands in Fiji, Lakeba features a unique blend of volcanic and limestone formations.
Interior: The center of the island is composed of volcanic hills, primarily acidic soil supporting fern-covered landscapes and pine plantations.
Limestone Caves: The perimeter is characterized by karst limestone formations. Notable caves include Ono-i-Lau and Qara-ni-Puka, which contain ancient stalactites and historical evidence of human occupation.
Coastal Plain: A fertile coastal strip encircles the island, where the majority of the population resides in eight traditional villages.

Tui Nayau: The island is the home of the high-ranking Nayau lineage. It was the home of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, the founding father of modern Fiji.
Vuanirewa Clan: The chiefly household is based in the main village of Tubou.
Tongan Influence: Due to its eastern location, Lakeba has significant historical and genetic ties to Tonga.2 This is reflected in the local dialect, architecture, and mat-weaving styles.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture: The primary livelihoods are copra (dried coconut) production and subsistence farming of root crops like taro and yams.
Crafts: Lakeba is renowned for the production of high-quality masi (bark cloth) and intricate woven mats.3
