The land was acquired by the City of Sandpoint in the mid-20th century for public use. It is situated on the southern edge of the Idaho Panhandle, an area shaped by glacial activity that formed Lake Pend Oreille. The park's ecosystem supports local flora and fauna typical of the Northern Idaho temperate forest biome.
