Malta Lake, Poznan, Poland, Europe
Malta Lake (Jezioro Maltańskie) is an artificial reservoir located on the right bank of the Warta River in Poznań. Created in 1952 by damming the Cybina River, it is one of Europe's premier regatta venues and the city’s primary outdoor recreation area.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is a narrow, rectangular body of water approximately 2.2km long. It is surrounded by asphalt and gravel paths, manicured lawns, and forested hills. The northern shore is dominated by the Malta Regatta Course infrastructure, including a finish line tower and grandstands. The southern shore features recreational facilities like a ski slope and summer toboggan run.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Jana Pawła II / Krańcowa, 61-131 Poznań.
Access: Located 2km east of the city center. Accessible via tram lines 6, 7, and 8 (Baraniaka or Termy Maltańskie stops).
Maltanka Park Railway: A narrow-gauge train runs along the northern shore from April to September, connecting Śródka to the New Zoo.
Parking: Multiple large paid parking lots are located near the Termy Maltańskie water park and the Galeria Malta shopping center.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake occupies the site of a former 12th-century settlement granted to the Knights Hospitaller (Order of Malta), from which the name "Malta" originates. The modern reservoir was heavily modernized in the 1980s to meet international rowing and canoeing standards. It is a shallow basin, requiring periodic draining and cleaning every few years to maintain water quality and remove silt.
Key Highlights & Activities
Water Sports: The venue hosts the Rowing and Canoeing World Cup. Amateurs can rent kayaks and pedal boats at several marinas.
Malta Ski: A year-round artificial ski slope and a summer bobsled track located on the southern embankment.
Termy Maltańskie: Poland's largest indoor/outdoor water park and spa complex situated on the northern shore.
Walking & Cycling: A 5.6km paved loop circles the lake, popular for jogging and inline skating.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The lake perimeter is equipped with public benches, outdoor gyms, and lighting for evening use. 5G cellular coverage is excellent throughout the basin. Numerous food kiosks, ice cream stands, and restaurants are clustered near the finish line grandstands and the shopping center on the western edge.
Best Time to Visit
The lake is most active during summer weekends. To observe professional rowing practice, visit on weekday mornings. The "Malta Festival," one of Poland's largest international theater festivals, takes place in the surrounding areas every June.
Facts & Legends
The lake is home to a floating fountain-the largest in Poland-which shoots water up to 60 meters high and features light shows at night. A verified historical oddity is that during the periodic draining of the lake, various WWII artifacts and even unexploded ordnance have been recovered from the bottom.
