The Moon Church (Biserica cu Lună), officially the "Dormition of the Mother of God" Cathedral, is an Orthodox cathedral located on the southern edge of Union Square in Oradea, Romania. It is famous for a unique astronomical mechanism that tracks the phases of the moon.
Visual Characteristics
The church is built in a late Baroque style with Neoclassical elements. It features a single tall bell tower (55 meters) topped with a copper dome. The exterior is notable for the astronomical clock integrated into the tower's facade. The interior is decorated in a rich Byzantine style with a gilded iconostasis and portraits of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan, leaders of the 1784 Transylvanian peasant revolt.

Construction occurred between 1784 and 1790, designed by architect Éder Jakab. The church was built during a period of religious tolerance following the Edict of Tolerance issued by Emperor Joseph II. The famous moon mechanism was installed in 1793 by local clockmaker Georg Rueppe.

The mechanism installed by Georg Rueppe is considered a masterpiece of 18th-century engineering and remains functional today without major modifications to the original design. The inclusion of the peasant revolt leaders' portraits was a significant political statement at the time, highlighting the church's connection to the national consciousness of the Romanian population in Transylvania.
