Visual Characteristics
The church is a large, modern concrete structure that replaced the original 19th-century building. It features a wide, fan-shaped interior designed to accommodate thousands of pilgrims. The architecture is functional and airy, with high ceilings and large glass windows. Adjacent to the main church is the Shrine of Father Laval, a separate vault housing his tomb, which is decorated with numerous plaques, flowers, and candles left by devotees.

Parking: A large paved parking area is available directly in front of the church complex to accommodate pilgrims and tour buses.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original church was built in the 1840s and became the center of Father Laval's mission to newly emancipated slaves. Jacques-Désiré Laval, a French doctor turned priest, arrived in 1841 and spent 23 years ministering to the poor. After his death in 1864, his grave became a site of reported miracles. The current modern church was constructed in the mid-20th century to manage the ever-increasing volume of visitors.
Key Highlights & Activities
The focal point of the site is the tomb of Father Laval, where pilgrims touch the effigy and offer prayers. A permanent exhibition/museum on the grounds displays Father Laval's personal belongings, including his medical bag, letters, and clothing. Every year on September 8th and 9th, the site hosts a massive national pilgrimage drawing over 100,000 people of all faiths who walk from across the island to the shrine.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The complex includes a large courtyard, a religious bookshop, and a souvenir shop selling candles and medals. Public restrooms are available on-site. The area is naturally ventilated and offers shaded seating areas for meditation. 4G and 5G cellular coverage is strong. Various local snack vendors operate in the immediate vicinity of the church gates.
Best Time to Visit
To avoid large crowds, visit on weekday mornings between 09:00 and 11:00. The atmosphere is most reflective during these hours. Avoid visiting on September 8th or 9th unless you intend to participate in the national pilgrimage, as the area becomes impassable to vehicles. Modest attire is required when entering the shrine and the church.
Facts & Legends
Jacques-Désiré Laval was the first person beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Mauritius in 1989. A unique aspect of the shrine is its cross-cultural appeal; Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists frequently visit Father Laval’s tomb alongside Christians, reflecting his status as a unifying national figure. It is locally believed that the water from the site holds curative properties.
