Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach is part of the larger coastal dune system of the Gold Coast, formed by Holocene-era sand deposition. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Yugambeh people. European settlement began in the mid-19th century, with the area developing into a tourist destination in the 20th century.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) offer optimal lighting conditions. The best months for consistent weather are typically September through November and March through May. Surfing conditions are often best in the morning due to prevailing onshore winds.

Facts & Legends

The name "Surfers Paradise" was coined in 1936 by the owner of a local hotel, Jim Cavill, to attract tourists. Prior to this, it was known as Elstonville.
