Temple of Diana, Evora, Portugal, Europe

The Roman Temple of Évora is a 1st-century A.D. ruin located in the historic center of Évora.

Visual Characteristics

The structure is peripteral and hexastyle, elevated on a 3.5-meter-high granite podium. It features 14 surviving Corinthian columns. The columns are constructed from local granite, while the bases and capitals are carved from Estremoz marble.

Location & Access Logistics

The temple is situated at Largo do Conde de Vila Flor, the city's highest point. It is located approximately 400 meters northeast of Giraldo Square. Access is free and the site is open 24 hours a day. Paid parking is available at Portas da Lagoa, a 10-minute walk away.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Built during the Roman occupation of Liberalitas Julia (Évora), it was dedicated to the Imperial Cult of Augustus. The structure survived because it was incorporated into a medieval fortress and later served as a butcher shop and wood store. In the 19th century, these additions were removed to reveal the original Roman architecture.

Key Highlights & Activities

Corinthian Columns: Observe the 14 remaining fluted columns.

Granite Podium: The massive stone base illustrates Roman civil engineering.

Photography: The site offers unobstructed views of the city's UNESCO World Heritage core.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The area surrounding the temple is flat and wheelchair accessible. 5G cellular coverage is available. Public restrooms and cafes are located in the adjacent Évora Museum and Cadaval Palace.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset provides optimal lighting for photography, as the low sun highlights the contrast between the granite and marble. Night viewing is also recommended due to integrated floodlighting.

Facts & Legends

Despite its popular name, there is no archaeological evidence linking the site to the goddess Diana. The name originated from a 17th-century legend. A verified fact: the temple is the best-preserved Roman monument in Portugal.
