Venetian Tower, Durres, Albania, Europe
The Venetian Tower is a 15th-century circular fortification located in the coastal city of Durrës, marking the southeastern corner of the city’s ancient castle walls. It serves as a prominent landmark at the start of the Vollga promenade and stands as a primary architectural remnant of the Republic of Venice’s presence in Albania.
Visual Characteristics
The tower is a cylindrical stone structure reaching a height of 9 meters and featuring a diameter of approximately 16 meters. It is constructed from solid grey limestone blocks and thick layers of mortar, with a flat rooftop terrace surrounded by traditional crenelated battlements. The interior consists of a single vaulted chamber with narrow arrow slits, while the exterior masonry shows various repair layers from different historical periods.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated at the intersection of Rruga Taulantia and Rruga Anastas Durrsaku, approximately 0.3km from the main Port of Durrës. It is accessible via the SH2 highway from Tirana, with a 15-minute walk from the central bus and train terminal. Public parking is available in the underground lot near the City Hall (Bashkia) or along the adjacent waterfront road.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The tower was built in the 15th century by the Venetians on the foundations of a previous Byzantine fortification that had been destroyed by earthquakes. It was designed as an artillery tower to defend the harbor from Ottoman incursions. The structure sits on the coastal limestone shelf of the Durrës peninsula, just above the current sea level.
Key Highlights & Activities
The interior of the tower and its rooftop terrace currently house a café and bar, allowing visitors to access the top of the structure. From the battlements, there is a 360-degree view of the Adriatic Sea and the city center. The surrounding plaza is a central meeting point for walking tours of the Roman and Byzantine city walls.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The tower contains a commercial bar with restrooms available for patrons. The surrounding pedestrian plaza is equipped with public benches, street lighting, and 5G cellular coverage. While the rooftop is exposed to the sun, the interior chamber provides natural shade. Multiple restaurants and pharmacies are located within a 0.1km radius in the old town area.
Best Time to Visit
The exterior is visible 24 hours a day, while the interior café operates from 08:00 to midnight. Sunset is the best time for photography to capture the lighting over the harbor and the sea. Summer months are the most active, though the sea breeze makes the rooftop comfortable even during high temperatures.
Facts & Legends
The tower is built directly over the ruins of a Roman tower, and during the 20th century, it was used as a military lookout point. A local historical oddity is the presence of a small, hidden entrance at the base that was reportedly used as an escape route leading to the inner city walls during naval bombardments.
