White Drin Waterfall, Kukes, Albania, Europe
The White Drin Waterfall (Ujëvara e Drinit të Bardhë) is a landmark located near the village of Radac in the Peja municipality of Kosovo, approximately 110 kilometers northeast of Kukës. While the White Drin River itself flows into Albania and joins the Black Drin at Kukës, the primary waterfall and its spring are situated on the southern slopes of the Zhleb Mountain in the Accursed Mountains.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall reaches a total height of 25 meters, cascading down a vertical limestone cliff in several tiers. The water is noted for its high clarity and turquoise-white color, which results from the high mineral content and aeration during the drop. The surrounding environment consists of a narrow karst canyon, rugged rock formations, and dense deciduous forest, primarily beech and oak trees.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the M9.1 highway from Peja toward the Radac village, a distance of approximately 11 kilometers. From the city of Kukës, the route involves crossing the Vërmica border into Kosovo and traveling through Prizren and Gjakova. A paved road leads to a central parking area near the Trofta e Drinit restaurant. From the parking lot, a 300-meter pedestrian trail with stone steps and wooden railings leads directly to the base of the falls.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is a karst spring where the White Drin River emerges from the Radac Cave (Sleeping Beauty Cave). The site was formed by the subterranean erosion of limestone during the Quaternary period. In 1934, a small hydroelectric power plant was constructed at the falls by Russian engineer Dimitry Tyapkin to provide electricity for Peja. The area was declared a natural monument in 1983.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with a loop trail connecting the waterfall to the Radac Cave. Photography is common, specifically from the wooden observation bridge positioned directly in front of the main cascade. Dining is available at riverside restaurants that specialize in local trout. During the summer, visitors utilize the shaded park areas for picnicking near the riverbanks.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site is well-developed with several hotels, resorts, and restaurants located within 500 meters of the waterfall. Public restrooms are available within these establishments and near the parking area. The trail to the waterfall is lit at night. 4G and 5G cellular coverage is reliable throughout the site. Natural shade is abundant along the river-walk.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for high water volume is spring (April–June) during the mountain snowmelt. For general tourism, June to September offers the most stable weather. Photography is optimal in the morning hours to avoid the harsh shadows cast by the canyon walls in the afternoon. In winter, the waterfall can partially freeze, creating significant ice formations on the cliff face.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical oddity is that the water from this spring is of such high purity that it is used as the primary source for the Birra Peja brewery. Local legend identifies the nearby cave as the "Sleeping Beauty Cave" due to the stalactite and stalagmite formations that allegedly resemble a reclining figure. A specific tip for visitors is to visit the higher tiers above the main falls, which are often less crowded and provide a view into the cave entrance.
