Aheloy is a small but historically significant coastal town located on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast, within the Burgas Province. It sits between two major resort areas—Pomorie to the south and Sunny Beach/Nessebar to the north—making it a quieter alternative to these bustling destinations while still providing access to rich cultural sites and tourist amenities.

Geographic Overview

Location: Approximately 28 km north of Burgas and 7 km south of Nessebar.

Access: Aheloy is easily reachable via Route 9 (E87), the main coastal highway. It's about 15 km from Burgas Airport.

Natural Setting: The town lies near the Aheloy River, which flows into the Black Sea. This estuary is an important ecological zone, particularly for migratory birds and aquatic life.

Historical Significance

Battle of Achelous (917 AD): Aheloy is most famously associated with one of the largest battles in medieval European history. The Battle of Achelous took place near the river of the same name, where the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon I defeated the Byzantine Empire. A monument commemorating the battle is located near the town.

Ancient and Medieval Roots: The area was part of Thracian settlements and later under Roman and Byzantine control. Archaeological remains are found in the surrounding countryside.
