Anthony Quinn Bay, Rhodes, Greece, Europe

Anthony Quinn Bay is a scenic, rocky cove on the eastern coast of Rhodes, approximately 15 km south of Rhodes Town and 4 km south of Faliraki. It is widely considered one of the most visually striking beaches on the island due to its deep emerald waters and jagged topography.

Visual Characteristics

The bay is characterized by its narrow, horseshoe shape, enclosed by high limestone cliffs and dense Mediterranean pine vegetation. The shoreline consists of a mixture of pebbles and large volcanic rock formations. The water is exceptionally clear with a distinct green-turquoise hue caused by the reflection of the surrounding greenery on the seabed.

Location & Access Logistics

Position: Situated immediately adjacent to Ladiko Bay.

Access: Reached via a paved road from the main highway. A steep set of stone stairs leads from the parking area down to the shoreline.

Transit: Served by local buses from Rhodes Town and Faliraki. Boat excursions from Mandraki Harbor and Faliraki frequently anchor here for swimming breaks.

Parking: Limited free parking is available at the top of the cliff, which fills rapidly during peak hours.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The bay was originally known as Vagies Bay. It was renamed after the actor Anthony Quinn following the filming of The Guns of Navarone (1961) on location. Quinn attempted to purchase the bay from the Greek government to establish an international center for artists and filmmakers. Although the sale was later invalidated by the Greek state, the name persists. The area is an ecologically sensitive zone with sharp underwater rock shelves.

Key Highlights & Activities

Snorkeling: The rocky seabed and underwater caves make this one of the premier snorkeling and scuba diving locations on Rhodes.

Rock Jumping: Various rock platforms around the perimeter are used by swimmers for diving into deep water sections.

Sunbathing: The beach is organized with sunbeds, though many are placed on narrow stone tiers or directly on the rocks due to the lack of expansive sand.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Catering: A small snack bar/canteen is located at the top of the stairs, providing basic refreshments and a panoramic view.

Facilities: Basic changing cabins and restrooms are available.

Connectivity: 5G signal is stable at the top of the cliff but can be intermittent at the water level due to the steep rock walls.

Best Time to Visit

08:00–09:30: Critical for securing a sunbed or a parking space, as the bay's small size leads to extreme overcrowding by midday.

September: The water remains warm, but the peak tourist volume of July and August is reduced.

Facts & Legends

A verified legal fact is that the "Anthony Quinn" land claim remained in Greek courts for decades, eventually resulting in the land returning to public ownership. Local lore often conflates the fictional events of the film with the actual history of the bay, leading many visitors to mistakenly believe the fortifications seen in the movie were real historical ruins.
