Asenevtsi Monument, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, Europe
The Asenevtsi Monument (Monument to the Asen Dynasty) is an iconic landmark in Veliko Tarnovo, dedicated to the four Bulgarian kings-Asen, Peter, Kaloyan, and Ivan Asen II-who restored the Bulgarian Empire in 1185.
Visual Characteristics
The monument features four massive bronze equestrian statues of the kings surrounding a 33-meter-tall granite sword pointing upward. The sword symbolizes the might and permanence of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It is situated on a scenic peninsula formed by a bend in the Yantra River, creating a dramatic silhouette against the backdrop of the old city and the Boris Denev State Art Gallery.
Location & Access Logistics
The monument is located at the foot of Mount Sveta Gora, on the Yantra riverbank.
Access: Accessible on foot from the city center via the Stambolov Bridge, a high steel bridge that begins near the intersection of Stefan Stambolov and Hristo Botev streets.
Parking: Limited street parking is available near the entrance to the Stambolov Bridge. Most visitors park in the central "Blue Zone" and walk across the bridge.
Connectivity: 5G/4G coverage is excellent throughout the monument area.
Historical & Engineering Origin
Inaugurated in 1985 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Uprising of Asen and Peter, the monument was completed in only one year. The design was led by sculptor Krum Damyanov. The placement of the monument on the river bend reflects the strategic and historical core of the medieval capital, Tarnovgrad.
