Dryanovo Monastery, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, Europe
The Dryanovo Monastery "St. Archangel Michael" is a functional Orthodox monastery situated in the picturesque gorge of the Dryanovska River. It is a major spiritual and historical center, particularly noted for its role in the 1876 April Uprising.
Visual Characteristics
The monastery is set against towering limestone cliffs of the Central Balkan Mountains. The complex consists of a central church, residential buildings with wooden galleries, and a high stone wall. The main church, rebuilt in 1845, lacks wall paintings-a deliberate choice to preserve the scars (bullet holes) from the Ottoman siege as a historical testimony.

Historical & Revolutionary Significance
Founded in the 12th century during the reign of Tsar Kaloyan, the monastery was destroyed and relocated multiple times during the Ottoman period. Its most significant historical moment occurred in May 1876, when a rebel detachment of 200 men led by Priest Hariton and Bacho Kiro defended the monastery against a 10,000-strong Ottoman force for nine days. The monastery was shelled and burnt, but its ruins became a symbol of national resilience.
