Banja Luka City Park, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe

Banja Luka City Park, officially known as Petar Kočić Park (Park Petar Kočić), is the central urban green space in Banja Luka. Located in the heart of the city, it serves as a primary gathering point and a venue for cultural events, named after the prominent Bosnian Serb writer and politician Petar Kočić.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a modern, open-plan layout following a major reconstruction in 2006. It is characterized by wide granite-paved walkways, a central fountain, and well-manicured lawns. The focal point is the monumental bronze statue of Petar Kočić. The park's architecture is minimalist, designed to integrate with the surrounding urban landscape of the "Gospodska" shopping street and the Boska Department Store.

Location & Access Logistics

Address: Kralja Petra I Karađorđevića, Banja Luka 78000.

Access: Positioned directly between the main administrative buildings and the primary pedestrian zone.

Transit: Most city bus lines stop at the "Centar" or "Boska" stations, which are immediately adjacent to the park.

Parking: No parking within the park. Paid street parking is available in the surrounding sectors, and a large underground garage is located nearby at the Vidović Palace.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The park was established in the 1930s during the era of the Vrbas Banovina. Originally featuring a more traditional European garden design with dense foliage, its 2006 redesign transitioned it into a more functional urban plaza. Ecologically, it serves as one of the "green lungs" of Banja Luka, a city historically marketed as the "City of Greenery" due to its high density of parks and tree-lined alleys.

Key Highlights & Activities

The Kočić Monument: A 1932 work by sculptors Antun Augustinčić and Vanja Radauš.

Staklenac (The Glass Pavilion): A modern glass structure on the park's edge that houses a music pavilion, a gallery, and a cafe.

Public Events: The park is the central location for the "Winter Park" (Zimzograd) holiday market and various outdoor book fairs or concerts during the summer.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The park is equipped with free public Wi-Fi (in specific zones), modern benches, and LED lighting. Public restrooms are located nearby within the Boska shopping center. The entire area is wheelchair accessible due to its flat, paved terrain. 4G/5G cellular coverage is excellent.

Best Time to Visit

The park is accessible 24 hours a day. It is most vibrant in the late afternoon and early evening when locals participate in the "korzo" (traditional evening stroll). During the summer months, the shade from the perimeter trees offers a reprieve from the heat, while the fountain area provides a cooling microclimate.

Facts & Legends

Local students often congregate around the Kočić monument before exams, a tradition rooted in the writer’s reputation for intellect and social defiance. The park is often referred to as the "Old Park" by elder residents to distinguish it from the newer, larger Mladen Stojanović Park located further north.
