Bar Old Olive Tree, Bar, Montenegro, Europe
The Old Olive Tree, known as Stara Maslina, is a biological monument located in the Mirovica district of Bar. It is officially recognized as one of the oldest olive trees in the world and serves as the primary symbol of the city's agrarian heritage.
Visual Characteristics
The tree features a massive, gnarled trunk with a circumference of approximately 10 meters, characterized by deep fissures, hollows, and twisted wood fibers. The canopy is dense with silver-green lanceolate leaves and remains productive, continuing to yield fruit. The surrounding ground is paved with stone, and the site is enclosed by a circular protective fence and a manicured park.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located 1 kilometer south of the Stari Bar fortress and approximately 4 kilometers northeast of the modern Bar city center. Access is via the Mirovica road. Local buses from Bar toward Stari Bar stop within walking distance. A dedicated parking lot for tourist buses and private vehicles is situated directly adjacent to the entrance of the memorial park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The tree is of the Olea europaea species and was scientifically dated by the University of Istanbul’s Faculty of Forestry in 2015 to be approximately 2,240 years old. It has survived multiple lightning strikes and fires throughout the centuries. It was placed under state protection as a natural monument in 1957.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can enter the manicured grounds to observe the tree from a 360-degree perspective. Information plaques provide details on the tree's age and the history of olive cultivation in the region. The site is a popular location for wedding ceremonies and cultural events related to the "Maslinijada" (Olive Festival).
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site is a gated park with a ticket office at the entrance. Bench seating is provided throughout the grounds. Public restrooms are located near the ticket counter. The area has stable 5G cellular coverage. Numerous souvenir shops selling locally produced olive oil and wood crafts are located immediately outside the park gates.
Best Time to Visit
Morning light is optimal for photography to capture the texture of the trunk without harsh shadows. The site is open year-round, but the surrounding vegetation is most vibrant in late spring. In summer, the canopy provides a significant amount of natural shade for visitors.
Facts & Legends
The location is known as "Mirovica" (derived from the word mir, meaning peace) because, according to local tradition, feuding families and clans would gather under the tree to resolve their differences and reconcile. A common local belief is that the tree possesses a unique energy, and walking around it three times will bring health and good fortune.
