Bourscheid Castle, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
Bourscheid Castle is a medieval fortress ruin situated on a 150-meter-high rocky promontory overlooking the Sûre River in northern Luxembourg. It is located 45 kilometers north of Luxembourg City and represents the largest castle complex in the country.
Visual Characteristics
The fortress is constructed from local slate and shale, blending into the natural rock formations. It consists of an inner core (the Upper Castle) surrounded by an outer wall fortified with eight towers. The exterior is characterized by conical slate roofs on restored towers and massive stone ramparts. Inside, the Stolzemburg House features a Gothic residential wing with a vaulted cellar and reconstructed wooden flooring.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at 1 Schlasswee, L-9140 Bourscheid. Access by car from Luxembourg City is via the A7 and N10, taking approximately 45 minutes. By public transport, visitors take the train to Michelau station, followed by a 2.5-kilometer uphill hike, or a bus from Ettelbruck (Line 135) to the "Bourscheid, Schlass" stop. A paved parking area is situated 100 meters from the castle gate.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Archaeological evidence indicates Roman-era foundations, though the first stone castle was built around 1000 AD. It was expanded in several phases, primarily between 1350 and 1450, when the outer curtain wall was added. The lords of Bourscheid occupied the site until the late 18th century; the State of Luxembourg acquired the ruins in 1972 to begin extensive structural consolidation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the entire perimeter via a self-guided audio tour available in seven languages. The circular path provides access to the artillery towers and the keep’s upper platform. Seasonal events include open-air concerts and medieval festivals. The castle is illuminated at night by a system of floodlights visible from across the valley.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The entrance pavilion contains a gift shop and a small museum displaying artifacts found during excavations. Public restrooms are located inside the courtyard. 5G cellular signal is available throughout the site. There is no café inside the castle, but several hotels and restaurants are located within 300 meters in the village of Bourscheid-Moulin.
Best Time to Visit
The castle is open daily from 9:30 AM. The best time for photography is during the early morning when fog often fills the Sûre valley below the castle walls, or at sunset to capture the western light on the slate towers. The site is most accessible from April to October; winter visits require caution due to icy stone stairs.
Facts & Legends
The castle was once the center of a large lordship comprising 55 villages. A unique feature is the "Stolzemburg House," which was meticulously restored to demonstrate the living conditions of the lower nobility in the 15th century. A local secret tip is the panoramic viewpoint located a 10-minute walk above the castle on the "Gringlay" rock, which offers a 180-degree view of the fortress and the river loop.
