Monument of Remembrance (Gëlle Fra), Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
The Monument of Remembrance, colloquially known as the Gëlle Fra (Golden Lady), is a war memorial located on Constitution Square (Place de la Constitution) in Luxembourg City. It is a central symbol of national identity, freedom, and resistance.
Visual Characteristics
The monument consists of a 21-meter-high granite obelisk topped by a gilded bronze statue of a woman holding a laurel wreath. At the base are two bronze figures representing Luxembourgish soldiers: one sitting in mourning for a fallen comrade, and the other standing to honor the sacrifice. The "Golden Lady" is depicted in a neoclassical style, positioned as if bestowing the wreath upon the nation.
Location & Access Logistics
The monument is situated at Place de la Constitution, overlooking the Pétrusse Valley.
Pedestrian: It is a 2-minute walk from Notre-Dame Cathedral and Place d'Armes.
Public Transport: The nearest tram stop is "Hamilius" (350m North). Multiple bus lines stop at "F.D. Roosevelt" directly adjacent to the square.
Parking: The "Knuedler" and "Monterey" underground parking lots are the closest facilities.
Historical & Structural Origin
Created by the Luxembourgish sculptor Claus Cito, the monument was inaugurated in 1923 to commemorate the Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the French armed forces during World War I. The granite obelisk provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the surrounding bastions.
Key Highlights & Activities
The site serves as the primary location for national ceremonies, including National Day (June 23) and Armistice Day. The square surrounding the monument offers one of the city's most famous panoramic viewpoints, looking over the Adolphe Bridge and the Pétrusse Valley. During the winter, the square hosts a major portion of the city's Christmas market.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The square is a high-traffic tourist zone with full 5G coverage. Public restrooms are located directly beneath the square (accessible via stairs near the monument). The site is flat and fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. A seasonal tourist office branch and various food vendors are typically present on the square.
Best Time to Visit
Morning is optimal for photography of the statue's face and the gilded surfaces. Sunset provides a dramatic backdrop over the Adolphe Bridge. It is a key stop for the "Winterlights" festival in December, when the area is heavily decorated and illuminated.
Facts & Legends
In 1940, during the Nazi occupation, the monument was dismantled and the statue disappeared, leading to its status as a symbol of national resistance. It was found in 1980 hidden under the stands of the national football stadium. After extensive restoration, the "Golden Lady" was returned to her pedestal in 1985. In 2010, the statue was temporarily sent to Shanghai to represent Luxembourg at the World Expo.
