Réserve Naturelle de l'Our, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
The Réserve Naturelle de l'Our (Our Nature Reserve) is a cross-border protected area situated in the Our River valley in northern Luxembourg, forming part of the Our Nature Park (Parc Naturel de l'Our). It is not located in Luxembourg City.
Visual Characteristics
The landscape is defined by the deeply incised, meandering valley of the Our River. It features steep, slate-rock slopes, dense deciduous forests (primarily oak and beech), and floodplains. The river serves as the natural border between Luxembourg and Germany. Historical visual landmarks include medieval castle ruins and traditional stone mill buildings scattered along the riverbanks.
Location & Access Logistics
The reserve extends along the northeastern border, primarily between the towns of Vianden and Troisvierges, approximately 50 kilometers north of Luxembourg City.
Vehicle: Accessible via the E421/N10. Parking is available in Vianden, Stolzembourg, and Dasburg-Pont.
Public Transport: Accessible via train to Ettelbruck or Diekirch, followed by regional buses (e.g., Line 180 or 181) to Vianden or Stolzembourg.
Trails: The "Ourdall" trail is a 12-kilometer path connecting Vianden to Stolzembourg.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The region was historically a center for tanning and forestry. The Nature Park was officially established in 2005 to balance ecological conservation with sustainable regional development. Geologically, the area is part of the Ardennes-Eifel Massif, composed of Devonian slate and quartzite. The Our River is one of the few remaining habitats in Central Europe for the Fresh Water Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera).
Key Highlights & Activities
Stolzembourg Copper Mine: A museum and underground gallery demonstrating the region's mining history.
Vianden Castle: One of the largest and most significant feudal residences in the Romanesque and Gothic periods, overlooking the valley.
Birdwatching & Wildlife: The reserve supports populations of black storks, wildcats, and several species of bats.
Hydroelectric Power Plant: The SEO (Société Électrique de l'Our) in Vianden is one of Europe's largest pumped-storage power stations and offers visitor tours.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Park Center (Naturparkzentrum) in Hosingen provides maps and educational information. The region features numerous "Nat'Our" loop trails (1–6), which are well-signposted. Cellular coverage (4G/5G) is generally stable, though it may drop in deep valley sections. Public facilities are concentrated in the larger villages like Vianden.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (October–November) is optimal for the colorful foliage of the valley's forests. Spring is best for observing the flowering of rare flora and peak river activity. The SEO visitor center and Vianden Castle are year-round destinations.
Facts & Legends
The Our River was a heavily fortified section of the Siegfried Line during World War II; remains of bunkers and tank traps are still visible in the woods. Local folklore tells of "Lesser" spirits inhabiting the slate caves and the river's deep pools. The freshwater pearl mussel, which can live for over 100 years, was once so abundant that it was a significant economic resource for the local lords.
