The legend associated with the Bridge of Love dates back to World War I. A local schoolmistress, Nada, and an officer, Relja, fell in love. Relja was sent to war in Greece, where he fell in love with a local woman and never returned to Nada. Nada died of a broken heart. To prevent similar fates, local girls began writing their names and their lovers' names on padlocks, attaching them to the bridge, and throwing the keys into the river, symbolizing unbreakable love.
