The lagoon is the result of a phreatomagmatic eruption of the Mombacho Volcano, forming a caldera that subsequently filled with rainwater. The Mombacho Volcano is classified as a stratovolcano, with its last significant eruption recorded in the 16th century. The area is part of a protected natural reserve established to conserve its biodiversity and geological features.
