Visual Characteristics
The complex consists of six colonial-era houses constructed primarily from adobe brick and timber. The structures feature red-tiled roofs, wooden balconies, and arched doorways. The buildings are painted in muted earth tones, with some exhibiting white or light yellow facades. The architectural style reflects early 19th-century Paraguayan vernacular design.

It is approximately 1 kilometer south of the main Plaza de la Independencia. Public parking is available on surrounding streets, though spaces can be limited. Historical & Ecological Origin
The buildings that form the Manzana de la Rivera were constructed between 1840 and 1860. They were originally private residences belonging to prominent Asuncion families. The complex was acquired by the municipality in the late 20th century and subsequently restored to serve as a cultural hub. The site is located on a slight elevation overlooking the Paraguay River.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the various exhibition spaces within the houses, which often feature temporary art installations and historical displays. The Casa de la Cultura offers a permanent exhibition on Paraguayan history. The Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Antropológicos hosts lectures and research activities. The complex also includes a small cafe and a gift shop.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the main exhibition buildings. Limited shaded areas are provided by the building overhangs and a few trees in the courtyards. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable within the complex. Food vendors are not present within the Manzana de la Rivera itself, but numerous cafes and restaurants are located within a 500-meter radius.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is in the late afternoon, approximately between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, when the sunlight casts longer shadows on the facades. The most pleasant months for visiting are from March to May and from September to November, when temperatures are milder. There are no specific tide requirements for visiting.
Facts & Legends
One of the houses, known as Casa Viola, is said to have been a meeting point for intellectuals and artists during the early 20th century. A local anecdote suggests that a secret tunnel once connected one of the houses to the nearby riverfront, though its existence has not been verified.
