Dassa Hills | Dassa Zoume

Dassa Hills is a geological formation located in the commune of Dassa-Zoumé, Benin.

This site comprises a series of granite hills rising from the surrounding savanna landscape.

The hills are composed of weathered granite, exhibiting shades of grey and brown. Vegetation cover varies, with denser growth in shaded crevices and sparser coverage on exposed rock faces. The elevation of the highest points reaches approximately 300 meters above the surrounding terrain.

Location & Access Logistics

Dassa Hills is situated approximately 3 kilometers west of the Dassa-Zoumé town center. Access is via the Route Nationale 1 (RN1). Turn west onto a dirt track approximately 1 kilometer past the town's main market. This track leads directly to the base of the hills. Parking is available on the unpaved area at the foot of the main ascent. Public transport to Dassa-Zoumé is available via intercity buses; local taxis can then be hired to reach the hills.

The hills are part of the West African Craton, formed by ancient geological processes involving granite intrusion and subsequent erosion over millions of years. Ecologically, they represent a transition zone supporting savanna flora and fauna adapted to rocky outcrops.

Hiking to the summit of the central hill is possible via a defined, albeit steep, path. Observation points offer panoramic views of the Dassa-Zoumé region. Exploration of smaller rock formations and cave-like shelters at the base is also an option.
