Drumhierny Woodland Hideaway, Leitrim, Ireland, Europe
Drumhierny Woodland Hideaway is a luxury self-catering estate located in Leitrim Village, County Leitrim, Ireland. It is situated on the banks of the Shannon-Erne Waterway, approximately 10km northeast of Carrick-on-Shannon.
Visual Characteristics
The estate consists of 16 modern architecturally designed wooden lodges set within 100 acres of mature private woodland. The lodges feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls, charred timber cladding, and private outdoor hot tubs. The landscape is characterized by dense canopies of oak, beech, and ash trees, intersected by gravel pathways and the adjacent canal waters.
Location & Access Logistics
The property is located on the R280 road in Leitrim Village. From Dublin (160km), travel via the N4 to Carrick-on-Shannon, then follow the R280 north for 10 minutes. The estate is gated with private vehicular access and parking provided directly at each lodge. The nearest railway station is Carrick-on-Shannon, and the village is a 5-minute walk from the estate entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The estate is part of the historical Drumhierny Demesne, which dates back to the 17th century and was formerly the seat of the La Touche family. The modern hideaway was developed as a sustainable tourism project, opening in 2022. The ecology is a protected "Old Woodland" site, supporting diverse birdlife, red squirrels, and native Irish flora.
Key Highlights & Activities
Guests can utilize the "Wellbeing Sanctuary," which includes an outdoor sauna and seaweed baths. On-site activities include walking the 5km of private forest trails, cycling along the Shannon-Erne Blueway, and kayaking directly from the estate's canal access point. The estate also features a central communal area called The Lodge for guest reception and refreshments.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Each lodge is fully equipped with high-speed 5G Wi-Fi, modern kitchens, and wood-burning stoves. Public restrooms are available in the central reception area. There is no on-site restaurant, but Leitrim Village offers several pubs and cafes within 500 meters. The estate provides bicycle and electric bike rentals on-site.
Best Time to Visit
The woodland is most visually striking during late October for autumn foliage or May for bluebell season. Mid-week stays outside of school holidays offer the highest levels of seclusion. Photography is best in the early morning when mist often settles over the canal and filtered light penetrates the forest canopy.
Facts & Legends
The La Touche family, who originally owned the demesne, were prominent Huguenot bankers who founded the Bank of Ireland. A specific tip for visitors: the estate's private trails connect directly to the public Shannon-Erne Blueway, allowing for a 15km flat-surface cycle to Drumshanbo without encountering road traffic.
