Lough Key Forest Park, Leitrim, Ireland, Europe
Lough Key Forest Park is a recreational destination located in the Rockingham Demesne in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland. It is situated on the southern shore of Lough Key, approximately 4km northeast of Boyle and 15km west of Carrick-on-Shannon.
Visual Characteristics
The park spans 350 hectares of mixed woodland, lake islands, and open parkland. Its visual identity is defined by the contrast between 19th-century limestone architectural remains, such as the Moylurg Tower and extensive underground tunnels, and modern timber and glass structures like the Visitor Centre. The lake contains over 30 islands, including Castle Island, which features the stone ruins of a medieval-style folly.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located on the N4 Dublin to Sligo road. From Dublin (160km), follow the N4 past Carrick-on-Shannon; the park entrance is well-signposted on the right. Boyle Railway Station is the nearest transit hub (4.5km), served by the Dublin-Sligo rail line. On-site parking is extensive with designated areas for cars, buses, and motorhomes; a per-vehicle entry fee is charged via a barrier system.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The land was originally the seat of the McDermott clan and later became the Rockingham Estate, owned by the King-Harman family. The original John Nash-designed mansion, Rockingham House, was destroyed by fire in 1957. The forest consists of a mix of native broadleaf trees and commercial conifers, managed as a public park by Coillte since 1972. The lake itself is a limestone solution lake formed during the last glacial period.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can access the "Lough Key Experience," which includes a self-guided tour of the 19th-century underground servant tunnels and the Moylurg Tower observation deck. Other activities include the Tree Canopy Walk (a 300m long timber boardwalk 9m above the forest floor), Boda Borg (a Swedish puzzle house), and boat tours of the lake. The park also features zip-lining courses and extensive cycling trails.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Visitor Centre contains modern public restrooms, a baby-changing area, and a large Lakeside Café. There are dedicated picnic areas and BBQ stands throughout the parkland. 4G cell signal is reliable near the visitor hub but can weaken in deep woodland trails. A caravan and camping park with full utility hookups is located within the park perimeter.
Best Time to Visit
The park is open year-round, but activities like the Tree Canopy Walk and boat tours have reduced hours during winter. Mid-morning (10:00–12:00) provides the best sunlight for photographing McDermott's Castle from the lake shore. Autumn (October) offers significant visual contrast as the deciduous woodland foliage changes color.
Facts & Legends
McDermott's Castle on Castle Island is the subject of the legend of Una Bhán, the daughter of a McDermott chief who died of a broken heart after being forbidden to marry her lover; she is said to be buried on the island beneath two intertwined trees. A practical tip: the park uses a "pay on exit" parking system, so visitors must validate tickets at the machines in the Visitor Centre.
