Echo Lake is a natural glacial lake, formed during the last ice age by the movement of glaciers which carved out The Basin. The surrounding landscape of Franconia Notch is a result of glacial erosion and subsequent geological processes. The area has been a protected state park since 1920, preserving its natural state.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is permitted in designated areas. Kayaking and paddleboarding are allowed on the lake. A 0.8-mile loop trail, the Echo Lake Trail, encircles the lake, offering views of the water and surrounding mountains. Fishing is permitted from the shoreline or by boat, with appropriate New Hampshire fishing licenses.

Best Time to Visit

The beach is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. The best time for swimming is between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when water temperatures are most favorable. For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the lake and surrounding peaks. High tide is not a relevant factor for this freshwater lake.

Facts & Legends

The name "Echo Lake" derives from the acoustic phenomenon where sounds can be reflected off the steep granite walls of Franconia Notch, creating distinct echoes across the water. A local anecdote suggests that if one shouts a specific phrase at the lake's center, a clear echo will return from the western cliffs.
