A 800-foot-long boardwalk allows visitors to walk through the gorge, with some sections featuring a covered wooden roof. Flume Gorge is situated off Interstate 93, Exit 34A, in Franconia Notch State Park. The park entrance is approximately 1 mile from the highway. Public transport to the immediate vicinity is limited; the closest major transit hub is in Concord, NH.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The gorge was formed by erosion from glacial meltwater over an estimated 200 million years. It was discovered in 1808 by two women, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Livermore, who were fishing in the nearby Pemigewasset River. The area was preserved and opened to the public in 1808.
