The Grosse Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1873. It was designed by architect J.H. McBride. Its original purpose was to guide maritime traffic on Lake Michigan. The beach itself is a natural formation of sand deposited by the lake's wave action over millennia.

The Grosse Point Lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses on the Great Lakes. A local anecdote suggests that during severe storms, the light keeper would tie himself to the lantern room to prevent being blown away.
