Goodyear Heights Metro Park, Akron, USA Ohio, North America

Goodyear Heights Metro Park is a 150-acre public park located in Akron, Ohio. It features a lake, wooded areas, and recreational facilities.

Visual Characteristics

The park's primary water feature is a 11-acre lake. Surrounding the lake are mature deciduous trees, primarily oak and maple, providing dense canopy cover in warmer months. The terrain includes rolling hills and open grassy areas. Several paved pathways traverse the park.

Location & Access Logistics

Goodyear Heights Metro Park is situated at 2050 Goodyear Blvd, Akron, OH 44305. It is approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Akron's city center. Access is via Goodyear Boulevard, which connects to State Route 8. A dedicated parking lot with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles is available at the main entrance. The park is served by the METRO RTA bus line 17, with a stop located at the intersection of Goodyear Boulevard and Tallmadge Avenue, a 0.3km walk to the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was originally part of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company's experimental farm and later donated to the city for public use. The park was established in 1967. Ecologically, it represents a remnant of the pre-settlement mixed mesophytic forest common to the region, with the lake being a man-made impoundment.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include fishing in the lake (Ohio fishing license required), picnicking at designated shelters, and walking the paved loop trail around the lake (approximately 1.5km). Birdwatching is common due to the diverse tree species and water source. Playground equipment is available in the western section of the park.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located near the main parking lot and the central picnic area. Several picnic shelters with tables and grills are present. Shade is abundant under the tree canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout the park. No on-site food vendors operate within the park; nearest services are located approximately 1km west on Tallmadge Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun. The months of May through October offer the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. The lake is accessible for fishing year-round, with no specific tide requirements.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lake was once used by Goodyear engineers for testing early tire designs in water conditions. While unverified, this story persists among long-time Akron residents.
