It is approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Concord, New Hampshire, and 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Manchester, New Hampshire. Public transportation options are limited; the closest major transit hub is in Concord.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Gunstock Mountain Resort was established in 1937 as a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Its original purpose was to provide public recreational opportunities, particularly skiing, during the winter months. The mountain itself is part of the Appalachian Mountain range, formed by geological processes over millions of years.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter, with 55 trails and 14 lifts. Summer activities include a scenic chairlift ride, zip lines, a mountain coaster, and hiking trails. The resort also hosts various events and concerts throughout the year.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Facilities include a main lodge with food services and restrooms. Restrooms are also available at various points on the mountain. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout the resort area. Food vendors are present within the main lodge and at select outdoor locations during peak seasons.

Best Time to Visit

For skiing and snowboarding, the season typically runs from December to March, dependent on snow conditions. Mid-week visits outside of holiday periods offer fewer crowds. For summer activities, the period from June to October provides optimal weather. The best time of day for photography is generally late afternoon for softer light on the mountain slopes.

Facts & Legends

The name "Gunstock" is believed to derive from a local legend about a gunstock being found on the mountain during early settlement, though definitive historical evidence is scarce. The resort is one of the oldest continuously operating ski areas in New England.
