Access is via Interstate 93 North to Exit 20, then Route 11 East for approximately 10 miles. The resort has a large, paved parking lot capable of accommodating several hundred vehicles. Public transportation options are limited; the closest major transit hub is in Concord.

Gunstock Mountain Resort was established in 1937 as a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Its original purpose was to provide public recreational opportunities, particularly skiing, during the winter months. The mountain itself is part of the Appalachian Mountain range, formed by geological processes over millions of years.
